Majmu'at ar-Rasail al-Arabiyya ( "Collected Essays in Arabic") is an Arabic text written by Ibn Qutaybah. The book contains discussions on grammar, syntax, rhetoric and poetry. It also includes the story of Alexander the Great's journey to Arabia. It was first edited and published by researchers at Baghdad University in 1925. Later it was republished by Beirut University Press in 1968. According to the original text, the book was written in response to criticism made by Ibn al-Muqaffa' against Arabic writers. It was written as a lesson to teach his sons the noble art of prose and poetry. The book is divided into three parts:The first part contains discussions on different topics related to Arab grammar, syntax, rhetoric and poetry. Some themes discussed are:Interpretation of dreams is another theme discussed by Ibn Qutaybah. He claims that dreams are interpreted differently by many people depending on their own worldviews and religious beliefs. He also discusses whether or not there is any value in interpreting dreams at all. Ibn Qutaybah believes that people must be cautious when interpreting the meaning of dreams.The second part is all about the story of Alexander the Great's journey to Arabia, which was an important event in Arab history. Ibn Qutaybah believes that the story is well-known among Arabs, but not well-known among other people. He offers much information about this event, including the location of the places Alexander visited and how much time it took for him to reach them. According to Ibn Qutaybah, it took two years for Alexander to reach Mecca during his tour around Arabia. The third part is about poetry. It discusses the most important points to be considered for poetry writing. Some of the points discussed are:The book is no longer used as reference material by researchers who want to study grammar, syntax or rhetoric in Arabic language. However, it is still used as reference material for students who want to study literature and poetry-writing in depth. Some people believe that the book was written in response to criticism made by Ibn al-Muqaffa' against Arabic writers. Ibn al-Muqaffa' criticised Arabic writers for not knowing grammar well enough and using wrong words, especially when they wrote about religion issues.
