The film is a modern adaptation of the Indian novel "Ki and Ka" by Suresh Kohli. Set in Mainpuri — a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh — "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan" is a true-to-life story about Punjabi men and women, their dreams and aspirations. The story begins with a young boy Pratap who is desperate to have a cricket bat as he knows that his school-going brother Vijay loves cricket very much. Pratap goes to the school where Vijay studies and sees him carelessly drop his tattered, old t-shirt. This incident hurts Pratap so much that he decides to share his last meal with Vijay before leaving for Calcutta, where he will sell his kidney for money so he can buy Vijay a cricket bat. But destiny has something else written for them... 15 years later, Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) is India's star all-rounder in cricket and is known as the 'Winning Captain'. He dreams of anchoring the national team to victory at the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Vijay also has a girlfriend, Gopi (Amrita Arora), and the film follows his development from a disenchanted cricketer, to an internationally recognized sportsman and to finally winning the coveted World Cup. But when the Cricket World Cup begins, it turns out that Pratap is in fact alive and working as a servant in his brother's cricket academy. He has spent 15 years in search of Vijay and can't believe his luck when he gets to meet him and is reunited with his long-lost love Gopi. But their reunion comes at a price. Pratap is forced to choose between his love for Gopi and the brother he never knew. The climax of the film reveals that Pratap's name is actually Roshan Singh Ahluwalia, which means 'calm mind'. The film was released on 12 May 2012 with Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada dubbed versions.
